Frequently Asked Questions

Should I take anti-depressants?
The tricyclic anti depressants such as amitriptyline and trimiprimine are very sedating, and in low dose are helpful for improving sleep. If depression, and/or cognitive dysfunction ('brain fog', poor concentration and memory etc) are prominent, then an SSRI drug such as sertraline ('Lustral') starting at 25mg a day, but can be up to 100mg a day, would be more appropriate. Note that the commonly used 'happy pill' Prozac (generic name is fluoxetine) is not well tolerated in ME, and often makes insomnia, anxiety and muscle spasms much worse.
